Kevin Reese Jr., a fifth grader at Robinson Elementary School in Texas (just outside of Houston) committed suicide on January 12, 2019. Children at his school would not stop bullying him and this was the tragic result.
Local 10 reported that the child’s mother, Crystal Smith, said “Kevin was a goofy child….He’s my little goof troop, I called him.” Kevin’s mother goes on to say, “He just had enough. He just had enough and he felt that he was backed into a corner.”
This is extremely painful to me because I have 3 children. I could not imagine what it must feel like to go through something this tragic, losing a child, especially to suicide.
Oftentimes as adults I think we so caught up in our own daily struggles that we forget to check on the mental status of our own children. We take for granted available family time. We ignore obvious signs of something being wrong. We don’t always take their perspectives and seriously as we should. They maybe children but they aren’t dumb. It’s our responsibility to be there when life gets so hard they can’t seem to manage it. We need to make sure we have an open door policy so that our kids feel comfortable and welcome to discuss whatever problems they are dealing with.
Please, be there for your children. You never know what they’re going through.
