Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr is the first elected woman mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone and she is improving her city. “Less testosterone at the table is often a helpful thing” she says.
In march of 2018 Aki-Sawyerr was elected to a 4-year mayoral term and she’s been striving to create proper positive adjustments for Sierra Leone’s growing population.
At first, she wanted to been seen strictly as professional who happened to be a woman. After some time passed she began to “see this differently”. Aki-Sawyer goes on to say “I do think there’s a really, really important space that women have to occupy, and the reason is because we look at life through a different lens.”
