“Imhotep of Ancient Egypt, was the real Father of Medicine. He lived about 2300 B.C. Greece and Rome had their knowledge of medicine from him. In Rome he was worshipped as the Prince of Peace in the form of a black man. His Ethiopian portraits show him as a Negro. Imhotep was also the Prime Minister to King Zoser as well as the foremost architect of his time. The saying, “Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die,” has been traced to him. Hippocrates, the so-called “Father of Medicine” lived 2,000 years after Imhotep.”

Imhotep – The Real Father of Medicine

When you google “Father of Medicine”, Hippocrates is the first name that pops up.

In fact, the entire first page of results from that search is about Hippocrates.

Shame on you google. Always so quick to give white people credit as the Father of this and the first of that.

Why is that? Is it because acknowledging the melanated origins of all things, including medicine, destroys the illusion of white supremacy projected throughout the media, schools, religion, politics, and any other crucial area of modern society?

According to an article on africaiswoke.com, Imhotep The African: Ancient Egypt’s First Architect: “Imhotep is the first Architect and Physician known by name to written history. According to Ancient Egyptian tradition, he was the son of Ptah, the Founding God of Egypt, and Robert Buaval contends that he was African in his Book, Imhotep The African: Architect Of The Cosmos.

He is credited with the necessary leap in imagination, technical design and Engineering construction techniques that made the construction of Pyramids possible, beginning with the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, and his crowning achievement is widely regarded as the 3 Great Pyramids at Giza which still survive as a wonder of the Ancient World.”

This brotha had a lot going on. Imhotep was the Chief Architect of world’s first step pyramid, an esteemed Astrologist, the world’s first Physician recorded by name, a Chief Minister, and more!

This is why it’s important for Black people to know our history. Whatever we don’t claim will be stolen and manipulated by those whom have no history or worthy accomplishments to claim.

Black People Invented Everything: The Deep History of Indigenous Creativity by Dr. Sujan Kumar Dass builds on how Black people invented medicine: “For as long as there has been evidence of injury and illness, Black people diagnosed conditions, used anesthetics, prescribed naturopathic medicines, and even conducted surgery. Many of today’s Western drugs are derived from herbs originally used by indigenous healers. The Hippocratic Oath actually includes an oath to the Egyptian Imhotep, known to the Greeks as Asclepius.”
